Children who refuse to use school bathrooms? Not if we can help it!

Last Monday, NOS news wrote an article about public bathroom use in schools. The Dutch Foundation of Stomach, Liver, and Intestine (de Maag Lever en Darm stichting) held a survey with a group of 1000 pupils, and the results are rather shocking; a lack of privacy and filthy bathrooms. What’s going on?

Bathrooms in schools aren’t clean enough

NOS reported that about 60% of Dutch pupils won’t use the bathroom during school time. The children said that there is a significant taboo amongst themselves to use the toilets, and the small bathroom stalls aren’t private at all. They are scared that other children will look over or underneath the bathroom stalls.

The shocking part is that the children explained that the school bathrooms aren’t clean enough. Pediatrician Marc Benninga mentioned in the article that between 50,000 and 100,000 kids suffer from constipation, and a part of those are because of the fact that the they refuse to use the bathroom during school hours.

Croon, from the Dutch foundation of Stomach, Liver, and Intestine, told NOS that most schools will only clean the bathrooms at night. During the day there are dozens to hundreds of children go to use the bathroom every single day. It is a serious issue that some of the pupils have to visit a doctor simply because the bathroom area isn’t clean enough.

This is a huge problem! We believe that everyone should have excess to clean environments. Especially young children. They should be able to use clean, and hygienic bathrooms. We have the responsibility to keep these kids healthy.

You can read the original article on the Dutch newssite NOS here (The article is written in Dutch).
